'You are what you eat and drink'
Yes, I know you have heard this many times, but it really is true!
The benefits of good nutrition are multiple. Besides helping you maintain a healthy weight, good nutrition is essential for the body and all its systems to function optimally for a lifetime. In fact, the benefits of good nutrition can be found in physical and mental health because a healthy diet provides energy, promotes good sleep, and gives the body what it needs to stay healthy.
Whether or not you are at your optimum weight or not, the benefits of good nutrition can be felt. We have been educated enough over the years to know that junk foods are not the healthiest choice. Yet many of us continue to indulge in them for emotional reasons. When we make the conscious choice to eat better and healthier, we begin to feel better about ourselves .
What are pomegranates good for?
Researchers report that they are rich in antioxidants that can keep bad LDL cholesterol from oxidizing (American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, May 2000). This degradation of LDL seems to be an initial step in the development of atherosclerosis. In addition, pomegranate juice, like aspirin, can help keep blood platelets from clumping together to form unwanted clots.
Does this make any difference clinically? More recent research has found that eight ounces of pomegranate juice daily for three months improved the amount of oxygen getting to the heart muscle of patients with coronary heart disease (American Journal of the College of Cardiology, Sept. 2005). Other researchers report that long-term consumption of pomegranate juice may help combat erectile dysfunction (Journal of Urology, July 2005). Investigators are also excited about the possibility that pomegranate compounds might prevent prostate cancer or slow it's growth.

What Causes Hamstring Injury?
Now that we know exactly what and where the hamstrings are, lets take a look at some of the most common causes for hamstring injuries. By far the most common cause of hamstring injuries originates from an imbalance between the quadriceps muscles (located at the front of the upper leg) and the hamstring muscles.
The quadriceps are a very large, strong group of muscles which help to extend the leg. These muscles can become so strong that they overpower the hamstrings, putting a massive amount of tension on the hamstring muscles. Combine strong quadriceps with weak hamstrings and you have a hamstring injury waiting to happen.
Other factors which contribute to hamstring injuries are a lack of flexibility
and poor strength of the hamstring muscles. Also, when the hamstrings become fatigued or tired they are more susceptible to injuries.

Preventing Hamstring Injury
The best preventative measures involve a consistent regular sports medicine program of both stretching and strengthening exercises. Increased flexibility will contribute greatly by a licensed sports massage therapist to the ability of the hamstring muscles to resist strains and injury. To follow are two very effective and very safe hamstring stretch
Stretching is one of the most under-utilized techniques for improving athletic performance and getting rid of those annoying sports injuries. Don't make the mistake of thinking that something as simple as stretching won't be effective.
Regular Massage Treatment will decrease Depression & rejuvanate your Body,Mind & Spirit
Integration With Bodywork
Many individuals I have treated respond well to professional bodywork, which often opens energy channels and chakras. A variety of therapeutic massage techniques, such as Swedish, Shiatsu, lymphatic massage, polarity and reiki can effectively be combined. There are many modalities that combine extremely well for this work and create a truly exponential effect.
Massage, primarily intended to induce relaxation, is also powerful for stress reduction and is tremendously beneficial for the maintenance of well-being. The goal of the Degriefing process is to actually unlock blockages, which have developed in our bodies, and shift the systems to a more harmonious state. It may be helpful to explain to your massage practitioner your emotional state so that she/he can address the session with a clear intention of healing and integrating.
Massage Therapy Improves Circulation
The long term effects of massage therapy are much more than just skin deep. Better circulation is part of the chain reaction that happens in the body as a result of receiving massage therapy on a regular basis.
A person with poor circulation can suffer from a variety of discomforts including pooling of the fluid in the extremities (like the toes), cold hands and feet, fatigue, and achiness created by an accumulation of lactic acid in the muscles. Good circulation brings damaged, tense muscles the oxygen rich blood they need to heal.
Massage facilitates circulation because the pressure created by the massage technique actually moves blood through the congested areas. The release of this same pressure causes new blood to flow in. The squeezing and pulling also flushes lactic acid from the muscles and improves the circulation of the lymph fluid which carries metabolic waste away from muscles and internal organs, resulting in lower blood pressure and improved body function.
Improved circulation is just one more benefit of massage therapy. Combined with a balanced diet and regular exercise, massage can be the key to leading a healthier lifestyle.
In the United States alone, more than 60 percent of the 45 million Americans who suffer from chronic headaches suffer from migraines. The disorder can be debilitating and typically results from high stress levels and/or lack of sleep.
Massage has two roles when it comes to treating migraines and tension related headaches. In a proactive role, massage treatments are performed on a regular basis to help the body maintain an optimal level of relaxation and stress-relief. This approach reduces the chances of migraine attacks and tension headaches significantly by relaxing muscle spasms and trigger points. In a comfort role, massage is done to ease the pressure brought on during a migraine or tension related headache. By focusing on the neck, shoulders, and head, massage can decrease the pain and discomfort brought on by migraine or tension headache.
According to the American Massage Therapy Association:
A recent study showed that massage therapy recipients exhibited fewer migraines and better sleep quality during the weeks they received massage, and the three weeks following, than did participants that did not receive massage therapy. Another study found that in adults with migraine headaches massage therapy decreased the occurrence of headaches, sleep disturbances and distress symptoms. It also increased serotonin levels, believed to play an important role in the regulation of mood, sleep and appetite.
Common Sports Injuries
Ankle Sprains and Strains
A number of factors can lead to ankle sprains, including poor technique and uneven terrain. The right footwear is essential to preventing a sprain, but it isn’t the only thing you can do. If you have a history of ankle injuries a brace can provide extra stability to prevent re-injury. Physical therapy after an injury can increase strength and range of motion.

Knee Pain
Knee injuries are often caused by improper technique, lack of conditioning and poor flexibility. While it’s important to build up training gradually to avoid overuse, biomechanics can also come into play, If you have flat feet or high arches, pronate or supinate, you may have more knee pain. Appropriate footwear or orthotics can improve alignment and help reduce injury risk. If you are a cyclist, proper bike fit can also make a huge difference.
Lower Back Pain
Low back pain is a common problem and one of the main reasons is inactivity. As we get older and less active, we lose the strength and balance in the core muscles (abs and low back) can lead to poor posture, improper alignment, fatigue and pain. Regular exercise is the best way to protect your lower back.
Elbow Pain
Tennis players and golfers have more elbow injuries than most, but anyone can develop elbow pain. Although conditioning is a major cause, proper technique is essential to preventing problems. Take a class or get professional instruction. Also, make sure your equipment fits well.

Shoulder Injuries
Frequently seen in throwing sports, rotator cuff tendonitis is a common cause of shoulder pain. Staying in shape and easing into an activity are the best ways to prevent problems. The are a number of potential shoulder injuries, however, so proper conditioning is essential for your sport.
Even with proper conditioning, equipment and other precautions you may still develop pain from exercise. If so, what you do immediately can prevent the pain from becoming a chronic problem. At the first sign of pain stop or ease back on your sport immediately. Apply ice for 15 to 20 minutes several times a day and elevate the injured area.
If you still have pain after two or three days, you should see your physician.
High blood pressure has more misconceptions than nearly any other disease. According to the American Heart Association, some of the most common are:
One of the most effective ways to stave off high blood pressure is massage therapy. A number of long term studies have shown that a consistent massage program can decrease diastolic and systolic blood pressure; decrease salivary and urinary cortisol stress-hormone levels; and lower sources for depression, anxiety and hostility.
As is the intent with all massage programs, the ultimate goal lies in a pain free and relaxing lifestyle. Controlling blood pressure is just one of the added benefits of massage therapy.
Lower depression, anxiety, and hostility
Massage Therapy Improves Rehabilitation after Injury
Rehabilitating any injury can be a tiring and frustrating process. While the main goal of physical rehabilitation is to increase strength and flexibility, it often ends before the area has been returned to its full pre-injury state.
Massage plays an important role as a supplement to standard rehabilitation procedures. By increasing circulation and relaxing muscles, massage helps the body to pump more oxygen and nutrients into tissues and vital organs. This allows the rehabilitating areas to become more flexible and heal at an accelerated rate.
Massage therapy is also used to aid in pain management as the injury is nursed back to full strength. By committing to a continual massage program, one can accelerate the healing process after injuries are sustained.

I'm self-conscious about a certain part of my body and don't want the massage therapist to see me. What can I do?
People are self-conscious for various reasons. Some of the more common concerns are:
I'm overweight.
Being self-conscious should never keep you from seeking health care, whether it's visiting your doctor or seeing a massage therapist.
If you're self-conscious about a certain part of your body, you can ask the massage therapist to avoid that area.
Or, you can opt for a therapy that is done through clothing, such as shiatsu or Thai massage. Because no massage oil or lotion is used, you remain fully clothed during the session.
You can even bring your own comfortable clothes to wear.
Just remember to provide complete and accurate information on your health history form, so that the massage therapist is aware of any precautions or contraindications.
Some men don’t feel comfortable having a massage by a male massage therapist. It may be due to his insecurity/outdated social and media stereotypes of the profession or the fear of getting an erection during the massage. Most Athletic men were had male therapist during their High School/College years and would prefer a male therapist. Most Have male questions about their body or injuries, & would prefer a male to answer them.
Erection is a common physiological response that happens when the parasympathetic nervous system is activated by touch anywhere on the body.)
Some women also prefer a female massage therapist because they say they feel more comfortable.
This doesn't just apply to massage therapy. A University of Michigan study found that 60 percent of women preferred a female doctor for a colonoscopy. Of these women, 87 percent said they would be willing to wait more than 30 days to get an appointment with a female colonoscopist, and 14 percent would be willing to pay more for one.
Unfortunately, men who choose to become massage therapists are often unprepared for the discrimination they face. When clients request female over male therapists, spas stop hiring them, however skilled they are.
That's why I believe it's important to challenge your preconceptions. Here are some tips to help you:
If You Are a Athlete in Pain,Regular Sports Massage must be in your Training Schedule
The prime purpose of sports massage therapy is to help alleviate the stress
and tension which builds up in the bodys soft tissues during physical activity.
Where minor injuries and lesions occur, due to overexertion and/or overuse,
massage can break them down quickly and effectively. Above all, it can help
prevent those niggling injuries that so often get in the way of performance and
achievement, whether one is an athlete, ardent keep fitter or a once a week
jogger.
This treatment is not just for the sports person: anyone can benefit from
sports massage, including people in physically demanding jobs and those not
quite so obvious occupational, emotional and postural stress may produce
many similar characteristics to sports injuries). Sports massage tends to be
deeper and more intense. It is based on the various elements of Swedish
massage and often incorporates a combination of other techniques involving
stretching, compression, friction, toning, and trigger point response
techniques similar to Acupressure and Shiatsu. The skilled therapist brings
together this blend of techniques, knowledge and advice during treatment,
to work effectively with the client to bring about optimum performance and
to provide injury free training and minimise post event injuries.
There are three areas where sports massage is used to benefit athletes.
Heel pain - Bursitis & Plantar Fasciitis
3 different types of heel pain:
Heel Pain Syndrome is caused by repetitive pressure placed on the heel of the foot when walking, which causes soreness of the heel.
"BusItis" usually refers to the inflammation of a certain part of the body, therefore Bursitis refers to the constant irritation of the natural cushion that supports the heel of the foot (the bursa). Bursitis is often associated with Plantar Fasciitis, which affects the arch and heel of the foot.
Plantar Fasciitis is caused by inflammation of the tissues connected to the heel bone, due to excessive pulling and stretching of the fibrous bands that support the arch of the foot. Continuation of this irritation can lead to heel pain, arch pain or a bony growth on the bottom of the heel bone called a "heel spur". Another condition related to Plantar Fasciitis is swelling on both sides of the Achilles tendon. Regular treatment of Reflexology will help heal & releive pain. If you have severe pain, you must see a specialist.
Causes
Bursitis and Plantar Fasciitis can occur when a person increases their levels of physical activity or when the heel's fat pad becomes thinner, providing less protection to the foot.
Other causes can include:
Prevention & treatment of heel pain:
Arch supports and orthotics (special insoles) are the best treatment for this type of condition as they gently support the longitudinal arch of the foot allowing it to settle into a more natural position.
Arch supports or adhesive pads can also help to strengthen the arch but orthotics may be a more permanent solution. An orthotic device (special insole) such as a heel cup or heel cradle will help to absorb shock to the heel by raising the heel, which will redistribute pressure and provide a cushion for the plantar fascia. If the heel pain is caused by over pronation then an orthotic with medial posting that supports the arch will correct over pronation preventing further heel pain.
Appropriate footwear is a key consideration in preventing heel pain; therefore shoes must be spacious and supportive.
Plantar Fasciitis and Bursitis can also be treated by:
